It is good to know that the best place to store paintings is on the walls of your home. But if works of arts need to be stored elsewhere, here are some suggestions:
Contact a vault storage company that handles storage of works of art. If you want to make sure that the environment for your paintings is stable, check with them about the insurance. Also, make sure to get some references for this company.
Placing paintings in a non-climate-controlled self-storage facility is not recommended. You need to remember that environmental changes will have an effect on the stored items, and some of these effects could be harmful.
Or...
Find an area where there are few changes in temperature and humidity, preferably in a closet, not in an attic, garage, or basement unless these areas are temperature-controlled. Wrap the items to be stored. If a painting is framed, bubble wrap or a storage blanket is recommended. Then seal it with packing tape.
Find a spare room or other climate-controlled place for the paintings. Be sure not to wrap them too tight. Be sure to keep the door closed to keep them safe.
