Utility and plant patent life are usually 20 years from the date the application was filed at the Patent Offie. In order to maintain the patent for that time frame, you must make timely payments. For design patents, the patent life is 14 years from the date of the grant. Unlike utility and plant patents, design patents do not require maintenance fees.
