If you do not get a patent, somebody else who has developed the same or an equivalent invention might patent it under their name.
Competitors may take advantage of your invention, especially when it is successful. They may also take advantage of scale economies to produce it. And without the intellectual property rights that a patent gives you, the transfer of technology would be difficult, or much worse, impossible.
