The cost of getting a patent is quite high, although the fees for the patent application, issuance, maintenance fees, and other related charges are reduced by 50 percent if you are a small entrepreneur or a single inventor. In this case, expect to pay a minimum of $4,000 to the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the life of the patent.
The filing fee is estimated to be from $400 to $1,000 or even more, depending on the number of claims in the application. If you hire a patent agent or a patent attorney, you will also need to pay them for the hours they work in taking care of your patent application.
If you will be filing for a patent outside the United States, the fees vary from one country to another. For instance, if you file in Canada, it may cost you $1,000. In Japan, which requires translation, it might cost you as much as $10,000. In addition, the patent attorneys in each location charge different rates, which can make your patent application either low or high cost.
