If you are working out a particular muscle group, you should do that set of exercises once a week. This is enough for you to form muscles, and if you are on heavy workout, it will take a week for your muscles to fully recover.
If you are working out moderately, you can try working out twice a week, but is preferable to work out only once. If you are more used to a high intensity workout, your muscles need to recover for a longer time before you can work out again without harming your muscles.
