It greatly depends on the height of the room. However, it should not be lower than an average adult's eye height in order for someone not to see the bulb in the sconce. This usually sets the mounting area of the sconce at about 80 inches. If you want something higher than this, it would still be tolerable; just make sure it is not too close to the ceiling.
