The following are the general steps you need to follow in constructing your prototype. It applies in different ways to varying types of inventions, for instance a simple plastic toy versus a comprehensive electronic gadget.

1. Visualize your invention by making a sketch of it. Keep all of your sketches in your logbook.

2. If you know how to draw your invention through the use of CAD (computer-aided design), then it is a good idea to get the software and do it on the computer.

3. Create a non-working model of your invention. You can use foam, wood, metal, paper, or cardboard. It will give you an idea if the form and specifications from your sketches fit the prototype that you will build later on.

4. Make a comprehensive plan of the working prototype of your invention. Write down all the materials that will be needed, the tools that you will use, and the steps to assemble your prototype. Have a book or kit on prototyping always ready for easy reference.

5. Estimate the cost of building your prototype. Ask for quotes from different suppliers and write down the prices of each part that you will use.

6. Always be careful in buying the parts for your prototype. Make sure that they match the specifications and model numbers stated in your comprehensive plan. There is a chance that your prototype will malfunction if you have purchased the wrong parts.

7. If your prototype will be quite difficult to build, you may opt to engage an engineer, designer, or skilled person who has knowledge in prototype assemby. They can be of great help, especially in assembling electronic parts.
