Whether you need a passport will depend on the type of cruise and the itinerary. In most cases, the cruise line will just ask you to present proof of citizenship and photo identification.
Prior to your cruise, the cruise line will send you a list of requirements for your particular cruise. If the list states that you will need a passport, then you should get one. Otherwise, don't worry about it.
