A consultant is usually a specialist with expertise in a specific area. He is hired to give his expert advice and provide solutions for a specific problem. Once the problem is solved the consultant's work is finished. A consultant usually doesn't get involved in areas outside of his specialty.
Coaching, on the other hand, uses a more holistic approach. The coach see the client as an integral part of the solution. As such, both the coach and the client examine the client's situation. Together, they create a plan of action and then work side-by-side to resolve the issue.
The key difference is that the coach does not have to be an expert in the client's business. The coach sees the client as the expert and himself as a facilitator. The coach's job is to collaborate with the client to create a solution using the client's knowledge and expertise. He leads the client to his own answers.
