Usually, trophies and plaques presented in prestigious award ceremonies such as Grammys and Oscars are made of glass and acrylic. The reason for this is that these materials are easier to craft using specialized machines. One disadvantage of glass and acrylic is that if it is not handled properly, it can be smashed into pieces. Also, the cost per award is rather expensive, so it's usually just those big award-giving bodies that give those kinds of awards.
On the other hand, trophies and plaques made of wood and metal are popular because they are much cheaper and the raw materials are also abundant. Many craftsmen still handcraft wood and metal, but even so, their costs are far cheaper than glass and acrylic. The disadvantages here are that metals are corrosive and can rust, while wood is a possible target for termites and dry-rot.
