Made from shingle-like thin slices of rock, slate is a beautiful roofing material found on glamorous homes. They offer great benefits as well as some problems. Here are their pros and cons:
Pros:
- Long lifetime
- Fire retardant
- Not much maintenance needed
- Doesn’t rot
- Wide variety of selections in terms of size and color
- Very natural-looking
- Can be laid out in a variety of patterns
Cons:
- Costly compared to other roofing materials
- Heavy; requires extra roof support, resulting in greater cost
- Maintenance is complicated
