Shingles and wood shakes offer different advantages and disadvantages; here is a list of their pros and cons.
Shingles
Pros:
- They look very clean
- They are affordable
- Asphalt or fibreglass shingles are very durable
- They can be recycled
- A wide selection of types, colors and brands is available
- Easy to install
- They don’t need constant maintenance
- Can be placed over existing roofs
Cons:
- Can be scarred when exposed to hot weather
- Can be damaged and blown off by strong winds
- They don’t have the dimensional look of wood shakes
Shakes
Pros:
- Look natural and beautiful
- Can be very distinctive due to a wide variety
- Good attic insulator
- Allow house to “breathe”
Cons:
- Need constant maintenance and repair
- Don’t have a long life span
- Not fire retardant
- Complicated to install
