There are many ways to tell if wood is rotting inside. Some wood looks good and shows no clue of rotting but if you check it, it is. You can tell if wood is rotting when you touch it.

Touching wood is a good way to find out. Tenderness in wood means rotting. Wood that is already brittle means that its inner core is already rotting. The texture also shows inner core problems.
