Lee Petty is the first Daytona 500 winner, defeating rival Johnny Beauchamp on February 22, 1959. Both Petty and Beauchamp were lapping Joe Weatherly's car at the finish line, and race officials initially declared Beauchamp the winner. However, after a review of the photographs of the finish, the declaration was reversed and Lee Petty was declared the first winner of the Daytona 500.
