"Silver-backed" mirrors are the ones usually found in bathrooms and on walls. These mirrors are made up of a layer of aluminum (not really silver) on the back of the glass. The glass serves as a protection to the aluminum to prevent scratches and bubbles. Antique mirrors did use silver for a backing, which is why they sometimes darken with age, as the silver tarnishes.
Earlier mirrors were made of whatever substances were highly reflective. Neolithic mirrors have been discovered, made of obsidian rocks and highly polished. These mirrors are surprisingly reflective, showing a clear, distinct image.
