The prize money in all race competitions is paid to the driver, and he must make settlement with the car owners. Basically, a NASCAR driver's income comes from the racing itself, personal endorsements, and licensing revenues. Their earnings from each race has two parts: the driver's base salary and the driver's percentage of the winnings.
For instance, in the Winston Cup, starting drivers may be able to get a salary of $100,000 plus 10 percent of the prize at stake. For more experienced drivers who have not yet achieved success, the salary may be between $100,000 and $200,000 plus up to 20 percent of the purse. Top NASCAR drivers command as much as $500,000 to $800,000 in salary and 30 to 50 percent of the prize money.
