A NASCAR season is composed of 36 races, which are held over a period of ten months. In 2004, NASCAR introduced a new playoff system, called The Chase for the Cup.
After 26 races, the top ten drivers in terms of points are eligible for The Chase. The same race layouts and points are then applied for all of the last ten races of the season. The driver who has the most points after the final race (#36) is declared Champion for that season.
