Before the actual race, there are so-called qualifying laps where the drivers will be making laps around the track individually for the time record. Their individual time record is used as a basis to decide on the starting order of the actual race. The driver with the fastest time in the qualifying laps gets a head start, the one who is referred to as being in the "pole position."
