The word canopy in Greek is "konopeion." It is derived from the word "konops" that literally means a gnat, or any various small biting and two-winged fly.
Shakespeare has defined the word canopy as a covering cloth against flies. Shakespeare's definition is closely related to the Greek term meaning gnat or fly.
The word canopy was used by Herodotus in speaking of the nets which the Nile fishermen used to protect themselves from mosquitoes - thus, mosquito netting.
