The original idea of trick-or-treating was more like "tricks for treats." The travelling "souls" (referring to the children) were expected to perform some kind of small trick or entertainment at each house they visited, and they would would then be given a treat. In other cases, the households offered candies on the doorsteps of their homes because of a belief that the treats would appease the wandering souls who might visit them.
From this latter belief, giving treats to the Halloween "wanderers" later became a way to avoid having your house vandalized on Halloween night.
More recently, the tradition has evolved into households just handing out treats to neighborhood children without really thinking much about tricks.
