Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, caused by the breakdown of cartilage. Bits of cartilage break off and cause pain and swelling between the bones of certain joints. It can involve any joint, but most commonly affects the hands and the weight-bearing joints such as hips, knees, feet, and spine.
