Diamond is the hardest substance in the world. Aside from its use in jewelry, it is also used for various types of cutting tools such as drill bits and saws. Diamond is also used to polish other hard substances, and as an abrasive.
Did you know that the majority of diamonds are used for industrial purposes rather than turning them into gems? This is because only about 25% of mined diamonds meet the standards for gem quality.
Diamonds perform precision tasks anywhere from cutting grooves around automobile pistons to cutting and polishing jewelry diamonds. Since diamonds cannot be cut by any substance except other diamonds, gem cutters use industrial-diamond tools to polish and shape gems. And yet most people think that diamonds are just for decoration.
