Fire and brilliance are very important. The fire and brilliance of a diamond are determined by how light reflects inside the gem, which greatly depends on how it was cut. The better the diamond's cut the more brilliance and fire. A well-cut diamond is by far the most excellent piece of jewelry worth having.
The light enters at the top of the diamond, forms a V-shape, and then exits at the top as well, or at least this is true with well-cut diamonds. Brilliance is defined as the reflection of bright-white light from the diamond's facets.
The artistry of cutting and polishing should reveal and enhance a diamond's fire and brilliance. A dull diamond is badly cut.
