Here are some tips to make sure that your homemade chocolates do not break or melt by the time they reach their destination:

- For chocolate bars - get a piece of hard cardboard, tape it to the back of the chocolate bars, then carefully enclose in a bubble wrap.

- When mailing chocolate with other things, enclose your chocolate in a zip lock bag and press it slightly until there is no air inside. In case your chocolate does melt, it won't smudge the other things in the package.

- If your chocolate is already wrapped, you can position it in a styro-box with dry ice, then seal and label it. Shipping companies also have their insulated packaging coolants for handling such goods.

- Mail your package early in the week, so that it does not get stacked up over the weekend.

- Another option is to have your package shipped overnight or with two-day shipping, especially during warm weather. This may cost more but is probably worth it to assure that your chocolate will arrive undamaged.

- Make sure that all the information is correct on the address label. Ask for the shipping details; if possible ask the estimated time of date of delivery so that you can inform the recipient of the expected delivery date. A package that does not require a signature is usually left at the door if no one is at home to receive the package. Chocolate will surely melt if left outside all day in hot weather, and can discolor if left outside in cold weather. High humidity can also damage the chocolates.
