Cleaning your rain gutters can keep them from getting clogged during the rainy season. If water is trapped in the gutters, it can speed up roof deterioration and cause damage to walls. Besides, cleaning the gutters gives you an opportunity to check the roof of your home regularly for damage.
To clean roof gutters, here are some helpful tips:
- Use a ladder to get on top of the roof, but don't lean the ladder against the gutter itself, as the ladder can bend or break it. Take trash bags with you up on the roof.
- Remove all leaves and other debris from the gutter by hand or with a large spoon and place it in a trash bag. As the bags get full, you can drop them to the ground.
- Run water into the gutters to wet down the layered dirt that has accumulated in them. To avoid damaging the gutters, remove the moistened dirt with a gutter scoop. Place it in a trash bag.
- Check all downspouts for clogs. To unclog downspouts, you can use a garden hose. If you can't clear downspouts using the hose, you can use a plumber's snake, but be gentle as gutters are not as strong as plumbing pipes.
- Alternatively, if you have a leaf blower you can use it to blow leaves and debris out of the gutters.
- Lastly, use a garden hose to flush out the gutters and downspouts by running water through them.
