Yes, you can use household ammonia. Clean your diamond in a solution of water and ammonia in a fifty/fifty mix. Soak the diamond for about twenty minutes and then gently brush the surface to loosen grime and dirt. Also get into the small areas between the setting and the diamond. Then rinse it thoroughly with warm water and place it on a paper towel to air dry.
This type of solution is not harmful even if your diamond's setting is platinum. You can use this solution with almost any kind of gemstone. The use of chlorine bleach is definitely a big no-no, however; it will cause the mounting to discolor.
